The Williamson County Appraisal District, commonly abbreviated WCAD, is part of the property tax system put in place by the Texas Constitution and Texas Property Tax Code. The Appraisal District is just one part of the property tax system. The responsibility of WCAD is to maintain records, determine tax exemptions, as well as appraise and value every piece of property in Williamson County. The property values from the Appraisal District are then passed on to school districts, cities, etc. so that budgets can be set into place based on each entity's tax rates. Once these values have been set, the property taxes are paid to the Tax Assessor-Collector. After Taxing Units have set tax rates, the Tax Assessor-Collector is responsible for calculating tax bills, mailing them, and collecting taxes.
